Colorful Cat Chaos: Ruthless Junctions Review

Published on 28 August 2026 at 10:56

Ruthless Junctions by Jigmatch Games is a colorful, competitive tile-laying game. Designed for two to four players ages 14 and up, players should expect: spatial puzzles, tactical maneuvering, calculated sabotage, and absolutely no mercy.

While playing, our minds immediately went back to the classic “take that!” games of our childhood—games such as Sorry!, Trouble, Aggravation, and UNO, where part of the fun came from upsetting another player’s carefully laid plans. Ruthless Junctions captures that same mischievous spirit while offering its own clever mixture of spatial reasoning, chain building, and tactical sabotage. It creates the kind of laughter, playful frustration, and friendly desire for revenge that makes everyone want to play again. For us, Ruthless Junctions has earned a place on the shelf alongside those beloved classics.

Gameplay Rundown

Ruthless Junctions plays in approximately 30–45 minutes. The goal is to build and extend chains of connected Junction and Link Tiles, earning points based on the total number of tiles in the chain you create or extend.

At the beginning of the game, Junction Tiles are randomly placed across the board. Each player then draws a face-up Link Tile showing the colors they must connect. Because everyone can see the other players’ links, you are never planning only your own move—you are also studying what your opponents may be able to accomplish on their next turns.

Players receive three actions per turn and may use them in several different ways:

  • Rotate a Junction Tile 90 degrees.
  • Exchange a Junction Tile with one from the Scramble.
  • Swap two adjacent Junction Tiles.
  • Place a Link Tile between two matching junctions.
  • Exchange an unwanted Link Tile.
  • Remove an existing Link Tile from the board.

Only one link may be placed during a turn, but the remaining actions can be used to prepare a high-scoring connection, disrupt an opponent’s plans, or reshape the board for a future move. Once a junction becomes connected to another junction, however, it is “locked” and cannot be rotated or swapped unless all of its links are first removed.

Scoring is straightforward: whenever a player places a link, that player earns one point for every tile in the newly created or extended chain. This makes combining two established chains especially rewarding. A single well-timed link can produce a significant number of points and completely alter the standings.

The game normally ends after a player reaches at least 50 points and everyone completes the current round. The player with the highest score wins, with additional rounds played if there is a tie. Groups wanting a longer experience can instead play to 75 or 100 points.

Strategic Layers and Audience

The heart of Ruthless Junctions is its three-action system. A turn is rarely limited to simply placing a tile. Players must determine how to use their actions most effectively: rotate a junction into position, swap neighboring junctions, remove an inconvenient link, exchange a poor tile, or interfere with an opponent’s developing chain.

The face-up Link Tiles are particularly important because they give players advance information about one another’s possibilities. If an opponent is holding a red-and-green link, you can examine the board and identify the connections they are likely pursuing. You may then use your actions to rotate a needed path, swap an important junction, or break apart a valuable chain before they can capitalize on it.

The game even allows players to score zero points intentionally in order to devote all three actions to sabotage or preparation. This creates an interesting tension between immediate scoring and longer-term board control. Sometimes the strongest move is not the one that earns the most points—it is the one that prevents an opponent from earning even more.

The game’s most unpredictable element is Artemis the Chaos Cat. When the Cat Tile is drawn, every link is removed from the board, wiping away the existing network and forcing everyone to reconsider their strategy. It is disruptive, dramatic, and perfectly suited to the game’s mischievous personality. Artemis was not the only cat to introduce chaos during our playtests. Our own cat, Otis, loved the game—and even created his own real-life “Artemis moment” when he jumped into the action and knocked several tiles off the board mid-game. It was an appropriately chaotic interruption that made the game’s cat-themed mechanism even more memorable for our group.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Highly Interactive: Players are constantly watching one another’s Link Tiles, evaluating possible moves, and disrupting developing plans.
  • Meaningful Tactical Decisions: Players must balance immediate scoring against board control, defensive play, and future opportunities.
  • Strong Replayability: Random Junction placement, changing links, special tiles, and player-driven manipulation ensure that the board develops differently each time.
  • Memorable Personality: The bright presentation, ruthless theme, and Artemis the Chaos Cat give the game a playful identity.

Weaknesses

  • Confrontational Gameplay: Sabotage is not merely possible—it is a central part of the game. Players who dislike direct interference may find the experience frustrating.
  • Manual Scorekeeping: Because points are recorded after each turn, one player must carefully maintain the scores and running totals.
  • Chaos Can Overturn Plans: Drawing the Cat Tile removes every link from the board, which is entertaining but may frustrate players who prefer greater strategic control.

Final Thoughts

While its deliberately ruthless interaction will not suit every group, it is central to the game’s identity. Ruthless Junctions wants players to compete, interfere, adapt, and occasionally sacrifice their own scoring opportunities simply to stop an opponent. That makes it an excellent choice for groups that enjoy clever moves, dramatic reversals, and friendly table rivalry.

After multiple playtests with different groups, Ruthless Junctions consistently delivered an exciting, interactive, and highly replayable experience. Because of its strong reception and engaging gameplay, we're awarding Ruthless Junctions the HeadBonk Games Seal of Approval—a special commendation for games that score high marks across all our playtest groups!

For those interested in picking up a copy, Jigmatch Games is planning a crowdsale for Ruthless Junctions December 4-20th. Be on the lookout for additional information about the event and an opportunity to support the game. Based on the enthusiastic response from our playtest groups—and from Otis—we believe this is one worth watching.
